in other disastrous kitchen news...

Last week:

(Cell phone rings, I pick it up; it's my brother)
Me: Hello?
C: Hey, where are you?
Me: I'm at K's, why?
C: Oh...nothing. Do we have a broom?
Me: Um...yes...it's by the trash can in the kitchen.
C: Oh, ok, good.
Me: What...happened?
C: Well, the light fixture in the kitchen fell and smashed all over the floor.
Me: Um, were you swinging on it?
C: (exasperated) No, I was sitting in my room studying, when I heard this ginormous crash and was like "HOLY CRAP SOMEONE BROKE IN!" But it was just the kitchen light falling and breaking.
Me: By itself? Weird.
C: Yup.

Today:

Maintenance guy: Ok, I put bleach in the dishwasher to help clear the clog. Give it a few minutes and then run some water through it, and if it still drains really slowly call me back.
Me: Ok.

[I turn the dishwasher onto "Water Saver" cycle and leave it to play Mario Kart.]

[Sitting on the couch, from which I can see partly into the kitchen]

Me (thinking): Gosh, the floor under the kitchen table is awfully shiny.

Me (10 minutes later): Why is the bleach smell getting stronger?

Me (12 minutes later, as I walk into the kitchen and into a puddle of water and bleach, noticing the orange tinge of the carpet where it meets aforementioned puddle) Well, crap.

It was brand new carpet too. Sigh.
